The Rector writes\u2026\u2026<\/strong><\/h3>\n

I am delighted to be in a position to announce the appointment of a new curate!<\/strong> He is the Revd. David Bowles<\/strong>. He currently lives in Bray and his home parish is Rathmichael in the Diocese of Dublin. For the past two years he has served as a deacon working in Taney Parish in Dundrum.<\/h3>\n

David has been studying part-time for ordination while also working as an accountant for an advertising group. This has meant that he has been required to study at the Church of Ireland Theological Institute and at Trinity College, Dublin for seven years. As you can imagine, he is looking forward to full-time parish ministry at the end of this long academic journey.<\/h3>\n

David is an outgoing person. Indeed some of you will be able to testify to this if you met him when he visited the parish on two different occasions. He lists as his interests, music (he sings bass), golf, badminton, scuba diving, reading, amateur dramatics, sport, hill walking, good food and travel. He is in his early 40s and is married to Michelle. They have two young children called Harry and Hannah who are in primary school.<\/h3>\n

We are fortunate in this parish to be a training ground for curates and we have been very well served by those who have been among us for their formative years in ordained ministry. David will continue this tradition. We look forward to welcoming David and his family to the parish. As yet no date has been set for his ordination however it is likely to be in early September.<\/h3>\n

As we enter the summer period<\/strong> in the parish, most of our parish organisations close for a couple of months and at the end of this month our parish schools go on holidays. Of course this does not mean that the parish stops too! The 24\/7 pastoral care of parishioners continues as does home and hospital visiting. (However as we are short staffed at present be patient as we cannot cover everything with the usual efficiency.) The full programme of Sunday and mid-week services will be maintained throughout the summer, with the exception of Sunday 12th<\/sup> July when we will observe \u2018Sea Sunday\u2019 with a special service in Passage West at 11.30. This will be fully advertised in next month\u2019s issue of Parish Matters.<\/h3>\n

I suggest that you take the opportunity to attend a different church occasionally over the summer. If you have had a late Saturday night and normally attend either Passage or Frankfield, why not have a lie in and go to Douglas or Blackrock? If you are planning a Sunday day trip or an early start on the golf course, why not attend the 8.30 in Blackrock? You will be on your way by 9.00am! It is important to keep up the regular pattern of Sunday worship, particularly in the summer when things are less busy.<\/h3>\n

The annual Diocesan Synod<\/span><\/strong> will take place on Saturday 6 June in the Rochestown Park Hotel. We look forward to a fruitful day of reports, discussion and deliberation as we review mission and ministry in the Diocese and chart a future under God with confidence and hope. It will be preceded by a service of Holy Communion in St. Luke\u2019s Church at 9.30. All parishioners, even if they are not synod members, are welcome to attend this service. I hope to see some of you there, along with the delegates from around the diocese. A. Wilkinson.<\/em><\/h3>\n

St Luke\u2019s and St. Michael\u2019s School Notes: <\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

S\"img_554375d53b736\"t. Luke\u2019s pupils have been taking part in many sporting activities recently. Our swimming team came 2nd in the Inter-Schools\u2019 Gala. Our soccer players enjoyed the Inter-Schools\u2019 Soccer tournament where our Senior team came 3rd and our Junior team won their section. Our PA also organised a very successful Hockey Blitz. Congratulations to all involved.<\/h3>\n

3rd Class enjoyed their Conferring Tour to UCC. The Ogham Stones, the Quad and the telescope really captured their imagination. They also visited the Lifetime Lab and took part in very interesting Science workshops there.<\/h3>\n

All our classes had the opportunity to attend Dental Health Workshops in School where they learned more about dental hygiene.<\/h3>\n

6th Class are looking forward to their overnight trip to Cappanalea in June. They organised a very successful Cake Sale to raise funds for their trip and made \u20ac460.<\/h3>\n

The pupils of St. Michael’s went to see E.T. the movie at the Gate cinema during the Cork Film Festival.<\/h3>\n

On the 17th of April they went to a science exhibition at C.I.T. We would like to say well done to all our students who participated in the annual swimming gala and a big thank you to the parents involved in organising the event.<\/h3>\n

We look forward to the end of year services and prize days that will be held for both our parish schools this month. They are a great occasion to celebrate achievement and to wish all the pupils and staff God\u2019s blessing as they prepare for the summer holidays or to move on to new schools in the autumn.<\/h3>\n

\"student\"Examinations:<\/span><\/strong> Finally at this time of the year we are mindful of all our younger parishioners who are sitting examinations. Perhaps they will find the prayer below helpful.<\/h3>\n

FORTHCOMING VESTRY MEETINGS<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

The date of the Frankfield Vestry has had to be changed. It will now take place on Wednesday 17 June at 8pm in the Sunday School Room. The next Select Vestry Meeting for Douglas Union will take place in the Canon Packham Hall on Tuesday, 28th July at 8pm.\u00a0 Easter General Vestry Meetings: These were held in Frankfield on Wednesday 5th April and for Douglas Union on the 21st April. We are grateful to those who allowed their names to go forward for election and as a result have now taken on new or additional responsibilities. Others continue in office and we appreciate their ongoing commitment. We thank all those who serve the parish in this capacity. Their commitment is appreciated. We also pay tribute to those who have stood down after a number of years in post. In particular we are grateful to Reg Treacy who held the office of honorary treasurer for Holy Trinity Church in Frankfield for a number of years. Diligence and efficiency were always the hallmarks of his time in this role. We thank him for all his work over the years and wish him well. We thank Roger Flack who has taken over as treasurer.<\/h3>\n

My ordination to the transitional diaconate will be on June 13th at Trinity Cathedral, Portland, Oregon.\u00a0 It’s pretty exciting.\u00a0 One week after that, I will begin a two-year curacy at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Salem, Oregon.\u00a0 My bishop was pretty keen to keep me in Oregon for the time being since 15 positions were open in the diocese this Spring.<\/h3>\n

I think of the parishioners of Douglas Union often as well.\u00a0 I put the Gaeilge Prayer Book to use regularly for Morning Prayer and remember you and the union in my prayers.\u00a0 The book and the time with you all in January continue to be incredible treasures.<\/h3>\n

United Service for Sea Sunday in Marmullane<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

On Sunday 12th July in St Mary\u2019s Church, Marmullane (Passage West) there will be a united service for our parish in celebration of all things nautical. Not only is July a good time to celebrate the pleasures of the sea; many of our parishioners have or have had professional links with the sea. We take this opportunity each year to thank God and pray for seafarers.<\/h3>\n

The service commences at 11.30, allowing people choice of how to get there: by car, walking, cycling \u2026 it is even rumoured that one year parishioners came by boat to the Sea Sunday service! So, gather your friends and come along to this special occasion, and if you have any ideas, pass them on to the Rev\u2019d Hazel Minion by 20th June.<\/h3>\n
